Mixed-Use Housing

Semester 7, Design

Brief :

Housing is the core need of human beings providing shelter, safety, privacy for them and their respective families. A community of such shelters where respective families live together that provides them with security, shared space, recreation spaces, amenities, all within close vicinity, gives rise to a neighbourhood. A housing community that has a mix of individual, family type, gender helps keep the societal balance and caters to the growing needs of family. In the current scenario, with the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic, many aspects about community housing have required to be updated. Thus, for this design exercise, students are expected to research and analyse ways families live, changing living and working patterns due to the pandemic and evolve design solutions to cater to this.

A house is a place for family living, a place where every individual enjoys, feels happy and comfortable, while simultaneously passing on family traditions. A house is a place for family living, a place where every individual enjoys, feels happy and comfortable, while simultaneously passing on family traditions. In these covid times, there has been a drastic change to this definition. The design idea thus, was to create a unit, in which each individual could interact with the family members, avail his/her privacy as well as enjoy the outside climate right from his/ her room. A module of 6m x 6m was used to create a massing arranged around a central courtyard and the units were such arranged, that each unit would overlook a public space on one side and a more private space on the other. The family and family+ units were designed as duplexes, where the spaces could accommodate the increased family sizes in an appropriate way while also allowing for ample activities to happen within the house. Each unit would have a double height balcony, that would function as a private ,brgarden. In terms of the master planning, all the wings of the housing complex were arranged in such a way that each wing would be connected by a bridge, that would open up to the community hall and Banganga riverfront, where all the recreation activities were planned. .
