Bus Terminal

Semester 9, Design

Brief :

Mumbai, being an important urban centre, has seen numerous mega investments in various sectors over the decades since independence. One of these sectors is transportation. Several large-scale projects have been done since the last 10-15 years. Some of these are the Bandra-Worli Sea link, the Eastern Freeway, the Monorail project and, now, the Metro Rail Project.

This semester exercise, proposed to develop a scheme for ‘Revamping’ BEST depots to create a ‘self-sustainable model’. This project aims to use maximum potential of BEST Bus depot plots, so that BEST can have a revenue generation module. The design proposal should have different zones for BEST Bus Depot with Buses circulation, stops & offices and other zones for commercial shops, offices etc. This is to be done to provide seamless & non-interactive movement between different zones. Proposed sites were: Juhu bus depot, Bandra West bus depot and Wadala bus depot.

Wadala Bus depot was the site chosen for the project. The design integrated multiple functions like shopping, food facilities, co-working spaces, seminar and conference facilities with the project considering bus Station activities and commuter’s circulation, as per the social & economic context of the site, which majorly comprised of residential and educational areas, demographic primarily being the youth. The design carefully segregated commuter facilities and BEST operations. At the same time, leaning towards creating an awareness about the history and importance of the Mumbai BEST with a self -sustaining revenue generation module.
